Simple Risk Checks for Small Businesses

Insurance is one part of protecting a business. The other part is lowering the chance of a loss in the first place. These checks take little time and can make a real difference.

Walk your space

Look at your property the way a customer would. Check for loose flooring, poor lighting, blocked exits and icy or uneven walkways. Fix what you can now, and write down the date you did it.

Keep good records

Store your policies, contracts, employee records and an equipment list somewhere safe, with a copy off site or in secure online storage. Good records make a claim much easier to file.

Protect your data

  • Use strong, unique passwords and turn on two-step sign-in.
  • Back up important files and test that you can restore them.
  • Teach staff to question unexpected payment or password requests.

Plan for a shutdown

Ask what you would do if you could not open tomorrow. Who would you call? Where would you work from? Which bills would still be due? A one-page plan is much better than no plan.

Review your coverage when things change

New equipment, new employees, a new location or a new service can all change your risk. Tell your agent when your business changes, so your coverage can keep up.
